Pragmatic patriots need not apply

From a survey of 106 randomly selected profiles of Ottawa area women aged 25 to 45 listed on Lavalife, an internet dating service.

Individuals could identify three things they value from a list of 37 possible choices.

I find it interesting that "knowing what you want" scored so high on the list, 9 out of 37.

This seems like the sort of thing a woman looks for in a man after she's spent time with one or more who don't know what they want.

But then, "I don't know what I want" can be code for "I don't know exactly what I want, but it's not a committed relationship with you."

Which demonstrates why "Open communication", "Integrity" and "thoughtfulness" all show up higher on the list.

The high rank of having a sense of humour is interesting. A better statement would be having my sense of humour. I think that is what was really meant. Humour is significantly over-rated by my take. No one likes a grumpy gruff, but then frat-boy high jinx can wear a little thin too.

I also find it interesting that respect for other cultures didn't do as well as respect for animals. Though not statistically significant, it still makes a case for all those dog and cat loving women out there. Heck, they're even making movies about them. The pet-thing is well understood between the sexes. As one blog colleague has mentioned, he likes cats but doesn't have one in case he meets a woman who has allergies to cats. It's been an issue in the past. Whereas my pet-loving women friends are more likely to have the "must love [insert critter name]" clause as a certain prerequisite requirement when it comes to partner issues.

Quibble: nobody actually owns a cat. They merely allow you to co-exist with them. Unless you eat them. That would be the dog in me speaking....

Corrie, in some kind of weird twist, I find your stories about men who love their cats very endearing.
